How to Become a Surrogate: Requirements, Process & What to Expect

Becoming a surrogate is one of the most meaningful things a person can do — giving another family the gift of a child. If you're considering it, you probably have questions about whether you qualify, what the process looks like, and what compensation you can expect. Here's everything you need to know.

Basic Surrogate Requirements

To become a gestational carrier, you generally need to: be between 21 and 40 years old, have had at least one previous healthy pregnancy and delivery, be in good physical and mental health, be a non-smoker with a healthy BMI, have a stable home environment, and pass a background check. These requirements exist to protect both you and the intended parents — and to give the pregnancy the best possible chance of success.

The Application Process

The process starts with a simple application. Once submitted, a coordinator will review your information and reach out for a phone consultation. If you meet the initial criteria, you'll move into the screening phase: a medical evaluation with a fertility clinic, a psychological assessment, a background check, and a home study. The entire screening process typically takes 4–8 weeks.

Matching with Intended Parents

Once you're approved, we'll present you with profiles of intended parents who match your preferences. Matching is always mutual — you choose them, and they choose you. Most surrogates are matched within 1–3 months. You'll have the opportunity to meet via video call before making any commitment.

Surrogate Compensation & Benefits

Base compensation ranges from $40,000 to $60,000+ depending on your experience and location. You also receive reimbursement for all pregnancy-related expenses: medical co-pays, travel, maternity clothing, lost wages, and childcare during appointments. All compensation is paid through a third-party escrow account for full transparency.

Support Throughout Your Journey

You'll have a dedicated coordinator with you from application through birth and beyond. We handle all coordination with the fertility clinic, attorneys, and intended parents. You're never navigating this alone — our team is available to answer questions, address concerns, and celebrate milestones with you.
